Neltod Should Race Well at Cromwell

Neltod. who is engaged in both trotting events at Cromwell to-morrow, is a five-year-old by Black Globe from Country Lady, by Sungod from Cardinal and Blue, by Copa de Oro from Lady Sybil by Rothschild from Thelma, by Kentucky. Neltod has had eight starts this season, and her record is two seconds and a third. She was third to Paratrooper and True Dillon in a division of the Stewards’ Handicap at the Gore meeting in December, second to Bonnie Drive in a division of the Novice Handicap at the Winton meeting, and second to Cabot in the Balfour Trot at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting last month. She is trained at Mataura by D. Todd, who has his full share of success at meetings on the minor circuit. Jottings Withdrawals for the Roxburgh Trotting Club’s non-totalisator meeting close on Monday. Handicaps for the Wyndham Trotting Club’s annual meeting will be declared on Monday. Acceptances close the same day. Ipso Facto is nicely placed off 12 yards in the Salisbury Handicap at Timaru on Saturday, and the Quite Sure gelding is due for a winning turn. He has had a second and a third in his last two starts. Not Entered None of the place-getters in the Southland Handicap at Invercargill on Saturday —Decreed. Brynwelon and Blue Mist—has been nominated for the Wyndham Trotting Club Handicap. Blue Mist, however, has been entered In both the Edendale and Final Handicaps. She may be better suited by the shorter distances. First Appearance Vilane, who made her first appearance in the Southland Stakes on Saturday, is a half-sister by Springfield Globe to Pierre and Cqudray. After being slow to find her feet, she was prominent for a mile on Saturday, after which she began to give ground. When more seasoned, she should gain further honours for this family. She has not been nominated for the Wyhdham meeting. Wyndham Stakes Roulette will be at a short price if he is started in the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes. He easily accounted for a similar field at Invercargill on Saturday and if he reproduces that form there does not appear to be any three-year-old in the race to foot it with him. Cabot went an honest race to be third to Roulette and Mighty Song on Saturday, and he may be the hardest for Roulette to beat. Grenade, a three-year-old half-brother by Blaydon to Landlight, Clueless and Keymaster, made a promising showing agaipst the novices at Invercargill and he may cause an upset. The others in the race would have to show great improvement to have any chance.

Timaru Nursery Stakes The Timaru Nursery Stakes, to be run at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday, is expected to be fought out between Gay Heritage and Young Charles, winners of the divisions of the Great Northern Trotting Stakes Tile race will be the first two-year-old classic in the South Island, and the Auckland winners will be opposed by some well-bred youngsters. Yankiwi, a colt from Free Again and Tuis, closely related to Pacing Power, was an impressive winner at the New Brighton trials last week- as was Seddonaire. a filly from Wee Potts. Morana. a colt by U. Scott from Coquette, and a half-brother to Vigilant, a good two-year-old winner, last term, lost a lot of ground at the start of his heat at the trials, but he showed a good burst of speed when he settled down, and with the experience he gained at New Brighton he may take part in the finish. Others to impress at New Brighton were Tiberius, a brother to Merrymaker, Farlena. Main Force, and Grattan Arrow. Any one of these is capable of causing an upset.

Wyndham Nominations Judged by the nominations, the Wyndham Trotting Club should have a very successful meeting this year. Several Canterbury horses have been entered and Highland Fling’s attempt on Rocks Ahead’s Southland mile record will be a great draw. Fabric Silk, a half-brother to Maori Home, who was formerly trained by A. McLellan at Invercargill, has been nominated for the two main races, ana on the strength of his recent performances he will have a strong following. Sirocco, a half-brother by Sandydale to Emulous, who has been a disappointment this season is also in these races. His Excellency. Melton, Hall Ace and Foreign Lady are others engaged. The Southland horses, Islaburn Lass, Peccadillo, Landlight, and Tutta Bella, will have to be at their best to head ofi the Canterbury visitors. Beckleigh is an interesting entry in the Edendale Handicap, a race for improvers to be run over a mile and five furlongs. He will be opposed by promising Southland improvers, including First Lord, Blue Mist, Saga and Parawa Derby. There is a sprinkling of Canterbury horses in the races for straight-out trotters and in the other races on the card. The meeting should be one of the most successful held in Southland for many years.
