MASTER EXONERATED

LOSS OF MISSIONARY SCHOONER PA AUCKLAND, Mar. 8.

The loss of the London Missionary Society’s auxiliary schooner John Williams V on December 23 was an “inevitable accident,” due to the exceptional presence of a southerly set of one knot (a strong current driving towards the land at one mile an hour), added to the fact that the chart position of Savaii was incorrectly shown by about four miles. This is stated by the assistant treasurer of the society, Mr H. Diamond, to be the finding of the Court of Inquiry held in Apia.

Mr Diamond added that the court pointed out that no blame attached to the master, Captain Stanton Page, or to any member of the crew, and all proper precautions were taken. The ship struck a reef on Savaii and was pounded by heavy seas, salvage attempts proving fruitless.
