USEFUL FIELD IN TIMARU CUP

A useful field of 13 is engaged in the Timaru Trotting Cup Handicap, the principal event at the Timaru meeting on Saturday. Of those off the front mark Zulu looks to have the best chance. At the Canterbury Park meeting on February 12 he won the Strowan Handicap over a mile and five furlongs after beginning slowly. Two races later he put up a solid performance to run third to Lyceum and Gantree over two miles in 4min 24 2-ssec. If he can be kept up with his field in the early running on Saturday he should take a lot of beating. Quarter Deck, Acclamation and Sahara Queen, off 12 yards, are all likely to take part in the finish. Quarter Deck was a double winner at the Wellington meeting, while Sahara Queen has several good placed performances to her credit. Red Flight showed good form early in the season, and he is an improver likely to add interest to the finish. Confirmed has had only have to be at her best to race promiseason and he makes no appeal. Sunny Hall came into her own over two miles at the Auckland Cup meeting, and she will only have to be at her bst to race prominently. Fan Tan was a winner over two miles at the recent Auckland meeting and as he has always impressed as a stayer his 36 yards handicap should not keep him out of' the money. The early favourites are Fan Tan, Red Flight and Zulu Van White for New Zealand The dual-gaited stallion Van White has been purchased by Mr Noel Simpson, of the Yendarra Stud, Otahuhu. The horse will leave shortly for New Zealand, where he will race before going to the stud. Spell for Attack Attack, who has put up the remarkable record of eight wins and a third in nine starts since joining M. Holmes's team at Russley. has been turned out for a spell. Attack has won over all distances and has earned £6762 this season. He will probably be prepared for the New Zealand Trotting Cup next November. Nicely Placed Rakautika, who won on the second day of the Forbury Park meeting, looks nice.ly placed in the Teniuka Handicap at Timaru on Saturday. Wyndham Juvenile Stakes After payment of the final forfeits, the following remain in the Wyndham Juvenile Slakes, of £350, for three-year-olds:—Nanimo, Red Anthony, Mighty Song, Cabot, Isa Lei, Native Pitch, Roulette; Baron Scott, Grenade, Eynsford Beech, Aerogard, Mary Ann, Night Flight, Kimberley. Filly, by Iccvus Limelight, who will contest the Timaru Nursery Stakes at Timaru on Saturday, is a filly ’by Xcevus from Sure Bonnie, by Quite Sure from Bonnie Barbara, by Jack Potts from Barbara Worth, by Rey de Oro from Logan Chimes, by Logan Pointer. Limelight will race in the interests of Miss J. Cuff. Croughton Injured One of the Dominion’s leading three-year-olds, Croughton, severely injured a tendon last week when he stumbled while working on the sand track at Addington. R. Young who was driving him, said that the injury was serious and Croughton would be unable to race again for a long time. A typical son of Springfield Globe. Croughton is out of Lady Antrim, who left other winners in Antrim Hall and Lady Milne He was educated by R. Stevens, at Orari, later going into J.' Young s stable. After being unplaced at his first start this season, he put up a good showing to run second to Bronze Gold in the Riccarton Stakes, a nose behind the winner. He later won the New Zealand Derby Stakes at the New Zealand Cup meeting. He fiinshed second to Daisy Bar in the Charles Cross Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting on January 3, and won the Advance Handicap at the same clubs meeting on February 12.
