GOVERNMENT MOVE
RESEARCH TO BE CARRIED OUT PA WELLINGTON, Feb. 21. Wave-recording instruments which should add considerably to New Zealand knowledge of the oceans will soon be installed on the west coast of the Dominion. During the past few months a small physical oceanographic section has been set up by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in co-operation with the Marine Department, the navy, the Ministry of Works, and the Meteorological Office. Some initial experiments have been carried out at Makara. Dr G. E. R. Deacon, of the Admiralty research station and one of Britain’s leading oceanographers, has already been in touch with the departments concerned, and his help has been enlisted for the formation of a scheme of oceanographic research for New Zealand. The British Admiralty is providing instruments for this work.
