YACHT CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW ZEALANDER PLACED SYDNEY, Feb. 20. The inter-dominion 18-footer sailing race on Sydney Harbour yesterday was sailed in intermittent rain squalls, and resulted in a win for the Sydney yacht, Marjorie 11, by 15sec from the New Zealader, Takiri, with Joyce (Queensland) third. The Takiri was the only New Zealand competitor. An allegation by A. Logan, of Auckland, that the 18-footer championships were dominated by professionals and bookmakers, was described as ridiculous to-day by Mr H. Morton, an executive officer of the Australian Sailing League, Mr Morton said: “The races are followed by two official ferry boats controlled by the league, and a nominal fee is charged to view the races from these ferries. Betting on the ferries is strictly prohibited. The league aims to build a school for crippled children from the profits of the ferry trips.

“The recent world 18-footer championships in Sydney were sailed under the Yacht Racing Association’s rules, the same as those used at the Olympic Games, and were unanimously agreed upon by league officials and by the visiting'New Zealand yachtsmen.” '
