Balloting Out Of Top-weight at Waikato

When Valley Boy was balloted out of the Storey Memorial Handicap, which was run at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, it marked the first occasion in New Zealand that the top-weight, of an important event had been affected by ballot restrictions. The ballot conditions laid down by the Waikato Club state that where two horses in the one ownership are engaged in a field on which a ballot has to be held, the committee has the right to eliminate one of these horses. Valley Boy and Lyn Vaals are owned by Messrs D. and R. Douglas, and when both accepted in the Storey Memorial one of the pair had to be eliminated. In this case It was Valley Boy. Ballot conditions laid down by various clubs differ in their operation. Some clubs rule that horses balloted out of the original acceptance list may return to the field should scratchings be received among acceptors not affected by the ballot. This does not apply to the conditions set up by the Waikato Club, and none of the nine horses eliminated from the Storey Memorial was eligible for reentry to the field in the event of there being any withdrawals. Jotting Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting are due to-day. Due for Win Mr Micawber is due for a winning turn at any time, and he will not be among the outsiders if he is started in the Maungatua Handicap on Saturday. Royal Chief Mare Milly Mandy has been working attractively at Wingatui, and the Royal Chief mare will lack nothing on the score of condition for her races at the Wingatui meeting . Bloodstock Sale Sirs represented iyn the yearling section of the bloodstock sale at Wingatui on Friday are Sir Galloway (six), Defaulter (two). Finis (two), Chatsworth (two). Stourbridge (two), and Lo Zingaro, Tiderace, Royal Chief, and Haughty Winner one each. Consistent Form The Salmagundi mare Olio has been out of a place only once this season, her record being two wins, one second, two thirds, and two fourths in eight starts. She romped home at Gore on Saturday* and in her present form she should soon get on the winning list again. Run of Success Broken Bombalina’s lengthening string of successes was broken at Hokitika on Saturday when Faites vos Jeux led the Kincardine colt home by a length and a-half in the Summer Handicap of six furlongs. It was a good performance on the part of the Wingatui galloper as he gave Bombalina 201 b.

Likely Favourite The Lo Zingaro filly Zarcon Is likely to be well supported if she goes to the post for the Tradesmen's Handicap at Wingatui. At Trentham she put up a good performance to run Speedy to a neck in the Camp Hack Handicap, of 11 furlongs. She was giving 51b to the winner. On Saturday Zarcon has 8.5, or 31b above what she carried at Trentham, and she looks one of the picks of the handicap. Vanity King In the Gladstone Hurdles at the Southland meeting last month Vanity King 10.5 was fourth to Benbecula 10.13, Sailor Boy 9.10, and Bridgehead 11.13. Vanity King has been dropped to 9.11 in the Taieri Hurdles, and will meet Benbecula and Bridgehead on 121 b and 41b better terms respectively. If Vanity King struck the form he showed at the Grand National meeting, when he won the Spreydon Hurdles, he would be a hard horse to beat '

Stourbridge Yearlings Among the yearlings to be offered at the bloodstock sale at Wingatui are two by Stourbridee —a filly from Batty and a filly from Night Bat, both dams being unraced. Batty is by Night Raid from Night Bat. by Lord Warden from Night Attire, whose dam was Glamis, a direct descendant of Ophelia, winner of the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, and she is from the same family as Chrysolaus, a noted sire in Australia. Leading Stake-earners Tauloch advanced his stake earnings for the season to £11,275 when he ran third to Voltaic and King's Ransom in the Jackson Stakes at the Wanganui meeting. Tliis still leaves him £505 short of Signal Officer’s record total for one season of £11,780 In two seasons of racing Tauloch has earned £16,125, which is the greatest sum won by any horse in New Zealand up to the three-year-old stage. King’s Ransom brought his total up to £16,320 bv his second in the Jackson Stakes, and he is now among the leading stake-earners at present racing in New Zealand. The veteran sprinter. Sleepy Fox, heads the list with £21,416. closely followed by Signal Officer with £21.385. Next come Howe £20,257, Brookby Song £17,260, Beau le Havre £17,041, Bruce £16,880, Balgowan £15,725, and Foxwyn £14.112.
