DANCE ON SATURDAY

ST. KILDA TOWN HALL DECISION OF COUNCIL " I think that the dance should run quietly now,’’ said Cr D. J. Simpson at the meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last night. The new regulations approved in connection with the leasing of the Town Hall for Saturday night dances would prevent further trouble, he added. “An attendant in the cloakroom will guard against drinking there," said Cr Simpson. “ The telephone will be available for patrons inside Ore hall, and this will take away the last excuse for anybody wanting to break the pass-out check regulations." The council rescinded the motion of November 15, 1948, that after last Saturday night no further public dances be held in the St. Kilda Town Hall. It was decided that the original lessee of the hall be given the first opportunity to lease the hall again.

An amendment by Cr B. C. Adam that the council reimpose the restriction on the use of the hall in the event of trouble was approved. Present at the meeting were the Deputy Mayor, Cr T. D. B. Roy, and Crs B. C. Adam, A., G. McKenzie, N. H. Shepherd, P. J. B. Rendel, D. J. Simpson, R. S. Brent, and J. R. F. Braithwaite. At a result of a complaint about tar particles becoming a nuisance during spraying operations by the council, it was decided to instruct the foreman to use his discretion whenever he thought it necessary to discontinue spraying. On the motion of Cr Simpson, an application for the erection of a workshop in Queen’s drive was granted. If it constituted a nuisance, he said, it was a matter for the residents, not for the council.

Accounts passed for payment totalled £1613 19s 6d, receipts were £15,196 17s, and the bank credit balance was reported as £7459 0s 9d. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the S|. Kilda Brass Band, and' to arrange for a social congratulatory function in honour of the band. In answer to a complaint by a resident about obscene language in the vicinity of her home, it was decided to advise the resident that that was a matter for the police.
