TRADE WITH INDIA
EXPANSION SOUGHT COMMISSIONER’S VISIT PA AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. “Trade between India and New Zealand has reached a high level during the post-war period and I hope to explore the possibilities of expanding this reciprocal trade,” said Mr G. P. Pillai, newly-appointed Indian Government Trade Commissioner for Australia and New Zealand, on arrival at Auckland by flying boat from Sydney to-day. Mr Pillai, who is making his first visit to New Zealand, is accompanied by his wife and daughter. A former acting Prime Minister of Travancore, the new Indian trade commissioner was a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations food and agriculture organisation which met at Copenhagen and Washington. India would like to obtain large quantities of milk powder and other dairy products in exchange for jute, shellac and textiles, said Mr Pillai. The main barrier to reciprocal trade between India and New Zealand was the existing commitments of both to other countries.
