Wingatui Candidate Will be First Selection In Midsummer Handicap
The fact that two horses from Wingatui in The Grate and Fine Night are included in the field for the Midsummer Handicap at Riecarton on Saturday will add to the interest in the race so far as southerners are concerned. Fine Night has not been raced since the Southland meeting at New Year, when, carrying B.OJ, he finished second to Gunther, 7.7, in the Invercargill Gold Cup, the time being a track record. The Nightly gelding looks particularly well at present. The Grate, top-weight with 8.2, will probably be the public’s first selection on the totalisator. She has won four races this season, and her most recent placed performance was her second to Royal Tan in the Wellington Cup with 7.8. Before that she had finished third in the Summer Cup at Auckland to Quick March and Iwo Jima with 7.11. A good stayer, with a solid finishing run, The Grate will be well suited by the long straight at Riecarton.
