DETRIMENTAL RESULTS
COHABITATION OF CHINESE AND MAORIS JURY’S CONDEMNATION PA WELLINGTON, Feb. 2. The jury in the Supreme Court returned a verdict of guilty after a retirement of nearly two hours in the case of Peggy Maaka, a Maori domestic, aged 24, who was charged with the murder of her foster child, an 18-months-oJd half-caste, Lee Kim Ahipene, at Te Ore Ore, near Masterton, on November 10,-1948. Mr Justice Fair sentenced Maaka to life imprisonment with hard labour A rider added by the jury stated; “We view with alarm the conditions allowed to exist by the authorities in permitting Chinese and Maoris to cohabit, to the detriment of the morals of both races.” Other than bowing her head, the accused displayed no emotion as sentence was passed.
