OBITUARY

MR JOHN PICKARD Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Jan. 10. The death occurred at Invercargill to-day of Mr John Pickard, a member of the City Council for the last 11 years, a retired railways servant, and a prominent social worker since his retirement nearly 20 years ago. Mr Pickard served for 40 years in the Railways Department. He joined the service at Port Chalmers in 1891 and before coming to Invercargill to take up tne position of district traffic manager in ’ 1928 he was assistant traffic manager at Auckland and Dunedin. He was an active member of the Railway Officers As a member of the Southland Patriotic Council, he took a special interest in the welfare of returned servicemen and in the Aid for Britain campaign he gave special service in the collection and sale of waste paper. . His social activities covered a wide / range. He was chairman of a school committee for 10 years, secretary of the Orphans Club, a life member of the .competitions society, a member of the progress league and the Invercargill Licensing Trust. He is survived by his widow and two sons, Messrs A. Pickard, the wellknown Southland cricketer and school master, and Mr T. Pickard, of Invercargill.
