DECEMBER ABOVE AVERAGE
The figures supplied by Mr D. S. Bain, Ribble street, show there were 203:1 hours of sunshine for December, compared with 160,1 hours in December, 1947, and a December average of 1601 hours. For the year the total reached 1917 hours 5 minutes, compared with 1781 hours 40 minutes for 1947. The 1948 total was the third highest recorded over the past 20 years, this figure being exceeded in 1940 and 1933, when 1981 hours 40 minutes and 1959 hours 15 minutes respectively were recorded. The daily average during December was 6 hours 34 minutes. There were eight days with 11 hours or over, including days of 12 and 13 hours. The best days were December 16 with 13 1-3 hours and December 18 with 14 hours. There were three days on which no sunshine was recorded. With the high sunshine recorded there was a correspondingly low rainfall average for December. Mr F. G. Russell, Till street, reports there was 70 points for December compared w’ith 1.49 inches in December, 1947, and a December average over the last 10 years of 2.84 inches. For the year 18.15 inches were recorded, compared with an average over the last 10 years of 26.10 inches. 'Rain fell on the following days: December 3, 31 points; 4th, 7; Pith, 3: 12th, 4; 18th, 3; 21st. 2: 30th, 28; 31st, 2.
