AGANEV HAS NARROW WIN IN PRINCIPAL HANDICAP AT TAPANUI ANNUAL MEETING

SPORTING

The Tapanui Racing Club was favoured with fine weather for its meeting at Gore on Saturday, and the going was fast. A fairly strong wind from the south blew most of the day.

Only six horses went to the post for the Tapanui Handicap, but it resulted in a close finish, one of the outsiders of the field, in Aganev, winning after being at the back of the field until the bend for home, wtiere she went through a gap on the rails when the leaders swung out. Brockie covered a good deal of ground, and Gunther struck trouble in the running. It will occasion no surprise if one of the big holiday handicaps is won by him. .

I Fonso had to be ridden right out to beat Golden Chips in the Dwyer Memorial Handicap, and a photo was called for to decide the result. During the day several photos were called for. Moore Abbey, the winner of the first division of the Mclntyre Trot, paid nearly a score for a win, but the biggest dividend of the day was paid by Plausible when he won the* saddle event, the figure being over two score.

There was a fair attendance, and the totalisator handled £19,927, compared with £10,556 10s last year and £22,408 10s at Gore two years ago.
