FRENCH STRIKE ECHO

MR. HORNER’S SUPPORT FOR MINERS

BRITISH UNIONS CRITICAL

.. NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. LONDON, Dec: 17. By 18 votes to 7, the National Executive of the Mine Workers’ Union last night accepted a sub-committee’s critical report of recent activities of the union’s general secretary, Mr Arthur Horner, who is a Communist. The sub-corrmittee was appointed last October after the executive had publicly rebuked Mr Horner for his state-

ments supporting the French miners’ strike, and their report is being circulated among the miners’ 5000 lodges, together with the executive’s approval of the Trade Union Congress’s recent anti-Communist statement. The report makes no recommendation about Mr Horner's future, but the industrial correspondent of the Daily Express says it is clear that he can no longer remain as the general secretary of both unions and an active Communist Party leader. He will now have to choose one role or the other. Mr Horner last night declined to talk about his intentions.
