Otago Farmer Visits Britain to Discuss Distribution of Food

Daily Times Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. “There is sufficient food in England for 40,000,000 people, but 50,000,000 people are trying to live on it. “ On the present ration scale it would take one person 40 years to ea%£ll the bacon from a fully-grown pig.” These two striking statements, emphasising the seriousness of the food position in Britain, were made by Mr L. 1$ Barrett, of Ida Valley Station, Central Otago, who returned by the Ceramic from his third visit to Britain. One of the objects of Mr Barrett’s visit was to discuss with the Ministry of Food the best method to distribute food, particuarly< fat sent under the Barling scheme! Mr Barrett said the most urgent task in Britain was toifeed the people. The worst feature or rationing was the shortage of animal, fats. It was encouraging to find that the Ministry of Food had established an efficient gift food distributing body in its Commonwealth Gift Centre, with headquarters in London. That ensured the proper distribution of all fats and other needs sent by various bodies in .New Zealand. . *
