“CITIZENS' FORUM”

FEES FOR SPEAKERS DESCRIBED AS EXTRAVAGANT PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. Fees paid to speakers in the Citizens’ Forum radio programme were described as extravagant by delegates at a meeting of the Auckland Trades Council. Members who had taken part in the programme said they had been paid £2 10s for half an hour’s recording work and they understood the chairman was paid £H. Their remuneration was at the rate of £2OO a week. A resolution asking the national executive to approach the Minister of Broadcasting for the administration of the programme to be put in the hands of the trade union movement to obviate wanton waste of public money was moved by a delegate from the Drivers’ Union. The resolution was moved in view of statements by the Minister that the radio licence fee of 25s could not be reduced.

Mr A. E. Andrews (Transport Wprkers’ Federation) said the trade unions had no say in the choice of subjects. Those putting over their views should do it in the public interest and not for money. The secretary, Mr H. S. Callagher, opposed the resolution, which was carried.
