Mr F. W. Lucas, the All Black rugby player* and former New Zealand, selector, left yesterday by air for his home in Auckland. Mr Lucas had been receiving treatment at the Dunedin Hospital for some time past for an old football injury.

The Macandrew Intermediate School Ladies’ Committee’s bursary, given for. the pupil making the greatest progress during the year, has been won by Margaret A. Cotton, of Green Island.

Mr D. Forsyth, who has resigned as headmaster of the Dunedin North Intermediate School to become headmaster of the Normal School, was met by pupils, members of the staff and by the committee of the Intermediate School at functions during the week. Noeline Carvell, head girl of the school, made a presentation .on behalf of the pupils and a gift was also made by the staff. After the closing ceremony Mr Forsyth was entertained by the School Committee and parents and a presentation was made to him. • Mr E. A. Cockroft, who has beei ! headmaster of the Ashburton High i School for 19 years, has tendered his resignation to the board, to become i effective on February 28. Mr Cockroft I received his education at the South- j land Boys’ High School and the Otago I University, where he graduated M.A l He succeeded Mr W. F. Waters at Ashburton in 1929. prior to which he was a senior master on the staff of the Timaru Boys’ High School. Mr Cockroft was well known in sporting circles, being an All Black in 1913-14. He served in the First World War, rising to the rank of captain, and in the last war he was in charge of Area lOC, Home Guard, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
