RADIO CONTEST

GAMING ACT INVOKED CHARGE AGAINST ANNOUNCER PA MASTERTON, Dec. 17. Decision was reserved by Mr Herd, S.M., in the Masterton Court when an Auckland radio announcer, Athol Coates, was charged with having committed two breaches of the Gaming Act. The charges related to the conduct of lotteries following the presentation in Masterton on September 16 of a “ Risks, Riddles, and Rewards ” show.

Mr R. L. Cresswell appeared for Coates, who pleaded not guilty. Counsel contended that the show was run on the same lines as the radio quiz show, “Posers, Penalties, and Profits,” which was broadcast from the main centres. Coates's show, he said, had been held in 42 places in New Zealand without police objection.
