STUDENTS PROTEST AT PROVISION OF NATIONALITY ACT

PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 17.

A protest against the terms of clause 23 of the British Nationality and New Zealand Citizenship Act, 1948, “giving the Minister of Internal Affairs power at his own discretion to deprive naturalised persons of their New Zealand citizenship, thus making them subject to the provisions of the Aliens Act, 1948,” was lodged by the executive of the Victoria University College Students’ Association in a motion passed at a recent meeting. The motion. said that if any person was accused of being “ disloyal or disaffected toward his Majesty,” which was an offence provided for in this clause, that person should be. entitled to a fair trial by ordinary process of law, whether he was British or not. It should require some evidence more substantial than the opinion of the Minister to condemn a person to suffer such severe penalties as loss of citizenship or deportation, the motion added.
