MARX AND CHRISTIANITY
Sir,—Dr Hunter seems disappointed that Karl Marx did the "will of the Father,’’ instead of crying “ Lord, Lord ” (Matt, vii, verse 21). If Dr Hunter’s house was blazing with his family trapped inside if. would he rather wait until the wouldbe rescuers had attended church services and had become “ surrendered servants of the Lord.” before attempting to save the flesh? We do not think so. Perhaps the oppressed in uncomfortable circumstances would prefer quick action from an outsider than wait until our religious leaders had considered and discussed just when it would be a good time to practise Christianity. If all religious leaders would read the Scriptures carefully again they will find two unforgivable sms: (1) The oppression of the poor; (2) self-righteousness.—l am. etc.. Neither Jew Nor Greek.
Sir,—l would suggest that ’’ Perplexed Christian ” should consult the sovereign authority on matters of religion, viz., the word of God. and not the Presbyterian or any other church. Let him read, for instance, the first epistle of John. The teachings of Marx are openly opposed to Christianity, and that should suffice. Whatever political views an individual Christian may hold, the Church, as such, has no part in any political system or human scheme of perfection. Her mission is to bring individuals to a personal allegiance to Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.
Surely never was the need more urgent than at the present time. The Gospel message has been obscured and encumbered by a large portion of the Church all too long. Let them cease to argue about church union, politics, and Communism, and devote their whole effort to evangelism.—l am. etc.. Urgent.
