BETTER QUALITY
EFFECT OF DECISION STONE FRUIT SEASON The growers had been asking for the removal, of the ceiling price, and they would be pleased that their hopes had been realised, said Mr J. H. George, an Otago director of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation and a Roxburgh orchardist. He added that the fruit grown in Central Otago would now find its own price level according to the quality of the type. Under the ceiling price system, the rubbish returned the same profit to the grower as choice fruit, and there was therefore no incentive to produce the good lines of fruit, he added. There should be a big crop of stone fruit this year, and this was probably the reason for the dropping of the regulation. The big crop did not mean, however, that fruit would generally be cheap, Mr George added. It did mean that poor quality fruit would probably not appear on the market, as it would be pushed out by the quantity of better grade fruit which would be forward this season.
