ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE
LABOURER FOUND GUILTY P.A. WELLINGTON. Oct. 30. In the Supreme Court a jury yesterday found Raymond Hopewell, a labourer and driver, aged 25 guilty on a charge of robbery with violence in that, by using personal violence on Christmas Eve, he stole £l3 10s in money from Ivan Lane O’Reilly. Detective Sergeant A. I. Knapp said he interviewed Hopewell, who said he had spent the afternoon of Christmas Eve drinking in Wellington with a friend named Alexander. He admitted striking O’Reilly and then running away. Two days later Alexander, at Nae Nae, handed him £3 10s, stating that it was his share of a wallet picked up after the accused had struck O’Reilly. ’• Counsel for the accused, addressing the jury, submitted that there was no evidence against the accused except the voluntary statement he had made to the police. The prisoner was remanded for sentence.
