S. Smith, in the Empire Handicap on the grounds of alleged interference to Checkmate, resulting in R. Donald, driver of Checkmate, and D. McGregor, driver of Trusty Scott, being thrown out of their sulkies. The inquiry was adjourned until the evidence of R. Donald, who was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, could be obtained. Donald was reported to have suffered head injuries. His condition on Sunday was stated to be satisfactory. An inquiry was held into an accident in which G. S. Smith, driver of Mountrnellick, was thrown from his sulky in the Victoria Handicap. The horses concerned were Bay Machine and Mountmellick. It was found that Bay Machine. driven by S. G. Leggett, tangled and interfered with Mountmelick. It was decided to reprimand Leggett for the way in which he handled his horse.
