TYRE PRODUCTION

CHRISTCHURCH FACTORY OPENED P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 29. The official opening of the Firestone tyre factory in Christchurch was performed to-day by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Nordmeyer, who said that with its opening tyre production in New Zealand had made a good start. In 1947, 392.000 motor tyres were imported but that was probably larger than the normal annual requirements. Mr Nordmeyer said he hoped that when the two North Island factories were opened New Zealand’s requirements of standard sizes would be produced in the country; He hoped the factories would turn out tyres equal in quality to any others in the world and as economically as other countries. The president of Firestone International, Mr Samuel Broers, said the factory had been built in record time. Seventeen technicians had been brougth from America to train the New Zealanders who were now becoming skilled. The visitors were shown through the factory, and Mr Nordmeyer, after having wrapped one tyre by machine, had to repeat the process for the photographers.
