CHRISTMAS FRUITS

DRIED AND CANNED VARIETIES AMPLE SUPPLIES EXPECTED Merchants and grocers in Dunedin expect that there should be ample supplies of both preserved and dried fruits to meet the Christmas demand. The Daily Times was told yesterday that the supplies of the ingredients of Christmas cakes, such as sultanas, raisins, and nuts, should be better than in recent years. , A merchant said that raisins, currants, walnuts, shelled peanuts, and similar lines had been on sale in grocers’ shops for some time, and although some retailers were at present better supplied than others, the Waitaki was expected to bring a fairly large shipment of canned and dried fruits from Australia before Christmas.

He added that the quality of the dried fruits was expected to be an improvement on that of past consignments.

A grocer said that canned fruits were being received in quantities which would enable the trade to supply everyone with some fruit at Christmas. There was also plenty of tinned foods which were popular at Christmas with campers. A line which has not been seen on Christmas cakes for some time is now on the market —imitation cherries which should help to brighten the festive baking.
