ORANGES ARRIVE

A LARGE SHIPMENT HEAVY SUPPLIES OF APPLES Heavy deliveries of apples were made to fruit marts in the city this week. The varieties were Stunners and Delicious, and most of the fruit was in poor condition. Consequently it had to be sold at reduced rates. Granny Smith apples are now finished for the season. A shipment of 3500 cases of Australian oranges arrived at the weekend. They came from Australia by the Mill Hill, and were transhipped at Wellington. Tomatoes are now arriving in increasing quantities from Nelson, Christchurch and Kakanui. A few locally grown tomatoes are coming on the market. Prices were easier at the beginning of the week, but firmed towards the end. Cucumbers and asparagus from Christchurch are in heavy supply at satisfactory prices. A few tree tomatoes are also coming to hand. The sale of New .Zealand lemons was steady during the week. The vegetable market was heavily supplied during the week. Rhubarb was in steady supply, but values improved slightly at the week-end. Green peas are arriving freely from Waimate, and sold well at the week-end. New potatoes from Nelson are in steady supply and also have a good demand. Range of Trices The rates ruling at the end of the week were:— Lemons: Meyer, 12s a half case; New Zealand, 24s country, 25s town; cases 9d extra. Apples: Delicious, 8s 6d to 16s 6d a case; Sturmers. 8s 6d to 16s; Granny Smiths, 13s to 18s; cases 9d extra. Poorman oranges: 22s a bushel case; New Zealand sweet oranges, 34s a case. Tomatoes: Kakanui, 3s 6d to 5s lb; Christchurch, 2s 6d to 4s 6d lb; Nelson, 2s to 4s lb. Cucumbers, Is to Is 8d each. Asparagus, Is 3d to 2s a bunch. Tree tomatoes. lOd to Is 2d lb. Chinese gooseberries, Is 6d to 2s 2d lb. Lettuce: Choice, 4s to 7s a dozen; others, Is 6d to 3s. Carrots, 19s 6d a cwt. Spring cabbages, 31s a swt. Beetroot, to 3s 6d dozen bunches. Spinach. 3s to 6s dozen bunches. Parsnips, 25s 6d cwt. Swedes, 8s 6d cwt. Cauliflowers, 8s to 14s a sack; others, 3s to 6s. Rhubarb, loose, ljd to 2d lb. Leeks, 4d to 6d a bunch.
