Lady Hutchison is spending a holiday in Wellington. Mrs Reg. Dawson left for Tauranga on Monday. Mrs George Burdon, of Mount Burke, is the guest of Mrs Guy Tapley. Mrs Errol Ansell, of Lower Hutt, is the guest of Mrs A. E. Ansell, of St. George Courts flats. Miss Joan Dew, who has been the guest of Miss Kathleen Falconer, has returned to her home in Christchurch. The Rev. Theo. Bamber and Mrs Bamber, of London, are the guests of Mr and Mrs George Buckley, of " Cleve Garth,” Queen street. Mr and Mrs J. L. Gardner, and Mr and Mrs J. Johnston, of Christchurch, were the guests of Mr and Mrs C. Smith, Richmond street, for the Labour week-end. Mrs G. Olsen, of Invercargill, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs C. H. Young, of Merchiston street, Anderson’s Bay, returned home yesterday. Miss Philippa Green, and Miss Frances Scott, of Springwood, Victoria, who have been the guests of Dr J. C. Eccles and Mrs Eccles, left on Tuesday on the first stage of their return journey. Mr and Mrs H- W. Milner, of Island Bay, Wellington, who are attending the meetings of the New Zealand Baptist Women's Missionary Union, are the guests of Mr and Mrs lan Milner, of Ravensbourne. Miss E. M. Gainsford, of Christchurch, retiring Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Baptist Women’s Missionary Union, and Miss Doris Gaze, Dominion treasurer of the union, are visitors to Dunedin. Mrs Jack Dellow, of Waipahi, was awarded first prize for the best short story in the competitions held by the Eastern Southland Women’s Institutes at Gore recently. The opening of the Leith Ladies’ Bowling Club was held on Wednesday afternoon. Progressive pairs were played for prizes given by the president, Mrs Wheat, land, the winners being Mrs Buchanan, lead, and Mrs Stinson, skip. The lucky number was won by Mrs Stewart. Miss Merle Mains, of Sawyers’ Bay, was the guest of honour at a party given last week by her parents and friends on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday. Her brother Noel presented her with tne traditional key, and Mr Duncan Wilson congratulated her and welcomed the guests. The Otago Ladies’ Bowling Club opened last week, when games were played under glorious conditions. Mixed doubles were played, the winners being Mrs Mcßorie and Mr Dumbleton, Mrs George Coughlan, president of the club, provided afternoon tea, and the winner of the “ lucky spot ” chair was Mr T. Dallas. Mrs K. Morrison, vice-president, returned thanks for the pleasant afternoon. Blue and gold irises, tulips and azaleas were used effectively to decorate the mayoral rooms in the Town Hall when the Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, and Lady. Cameron invited representatives of the University, civic bodies and educational institutes to an informal morning tea on Wednesday to meet Dr R. S. Ailken, the new Vice-chancellor of the University. Morning tea was served by eight pupils from the Otago Girls’ High School The Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association greens at Logan Park were opened recently with a large number of bowlers and friends present.' Mrs E. Longworth, president of the association, extended a welcome to the Mayoress, Lady Cameron, visitors and fellow bowlers. The greens were declared open by Lady Cameron, who rolled the first bowl. A happy feature of the afternoon was the arrival of Sir Donald Cameron and Mr W. Partridge, Mayor of Cromwell, who conveyed the good wishes of the Cromwell Club.

Mrs Maurice Arthur, chairwoman of the Play-reading Circle of the Otago Women’s Club, welcomed a large attendance of members at a very successful evening when the circle presented four original plays entered for the Lady Ferguson Memorial play-writing competition. The winning play was “ Cob Cottage,” by Miss Sylvia Thomson. During the evening Mrs S. Batchelor presented Miss Thomson with Mr Butterworth’s prize for this competition, while Mrs W. J. White was presented with the circle prize for second place. The presentation and staging of the plays was excellent, some beautiful and clever scenes being produced. The Barth School Association held its general meeting in the schoolroom, Capitol building, on Wednesday. Miss Irene Barth presided. The third group of members had the responsibility for the evening's programme, and delighted the audience with a play-reading entitled “ Scraps.” Those taking part were Misses B. and I. Barth, S. Martin, H. Roy, O. Nieper, B. Errington and C. Heinemann. The musical part of the programme was as follows: Piano duets, “The Waltz of the Flowers” (Tschaikowsky), and two “Henry VIII Dances” (German), played by Misses O. and E. Nieper: piano solo. First Movement B flat Minor Sonata (Chopin), Mrs Joy Aitcheson, who also sang two songs, “ If There Were Dreams to Sell” (Ireland), and "The Fairy Tailor” (Head). Miss H. Roy sang "Now Sleeps the Crimson Rose” (Quilter), and "The Rooks Fly Homeward” (Rowley). Tile annual meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Otago Women’s Club was held on Thursday morning. The president of the circle, Mrs R. Dawson, made appreciative reference to the quality and variety of the exhibitions held during the past year. In moving the adoption of the annual report. Miss Duthie voiced the thanks of the committee to Misses Sawers and McHutgheson on the excellence of the item which they had arranged for the club birthday party. At the close of the meeting Mrs Dawson, who was leaving for Tauranga. was entertained at morning tea. Miss Sawers thanked her for the assistance she had always so willingly given to the circle. The officers for the year are as follows: Chairwoman, Miss M. Sawers; vice-chair-woman, Miss A. Duthie; secretary and treasurer. Mrs M. S. Waugh; committee — Mesdames C. Lees, R. Fraser. W. Arkle, O. On Thursday evening the Otago Pioneer Women's Memorial Association celebrated the seventh anniversary of the day on which they purchased their memorial building. The president.. Dr E. iH. McKinnon, welcomed a large number of members and delegates from affiliated societies. An excellent programme had been arranged by Miss Florence Pacey and Mrs Ernest "Drake, both of whom acted as accompanists. There were humorous sketches by Misses Maureen Burns. Margaret Ufton, and Grace Wilson, a pianoforte solo by Mr> Kelvin Barton; vocal solos by Mesdames Avis McFarlane, J. Pistor, R. White, and Misses Doris Melser, June Penno, Norma Pinfold, Florence Smith, and Alma Wilson; a vocal duet by Patricia Brown and Cynthia Downie; and recitations by June Bissett. During the evening a farewell gift was made to Mrs A. E. Ansell, who has been a staunch supporter of the association since its inception, and is now leaving to make a home in Wellington. At supper time a seven-candle birthday cake was cut by the Mayoress, Lady Cameron. The Literary Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held Its annual party in the club lounge on Tuesday evening, when, in spite of the weather, there was a large attendance. After a welcome had been extended by Miss Alexander, Miss Stella Bayley presented three violin solos and Miss Sada Martin two vocal solos, the accompanists being Mrs J. A. Wallace and Miss Blanche Errington. Scenes from “ The Houseboat on the Styx,” by John Kendrick Bangs, were presented (with short introductions by Mrs J. Malcolm) by members of the circle, and proved to be refreshing entertainment. The performers were; Miss Helen Wilson. Miss Rewa Begg, Mrs A. A. Fairbairn, Mrs E. J. Anderson, Miss L. McCarthy, Miss G. Famie Miss A. McDougall, Miss N. Alexander. Mrs J. W. L. Mitchell, Mrs M. Arthur, Mrs H. A. Palmer, Mrs E. Kerr. Mrs Langley. Mrs W. J. White, and Miss K. McLeod. Miss A. McDougall and Mrs M. E. Begg, who were placed first and second respectively in the circle’s short story competition, were presented with their prizes by Mrs Stanley Batchelor, the donor. The club president. Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald, extended thanks to the performers.
