OLD FOLKS' CLUB OFFICIAL APPROVAL OF PROJECT The Library Committee of the City Council has decided to provide library facilities for the Otago Beneficiaries and Old Folks’ Association at its club rooms in the Octagon. The conditions under which they are to be made available include the setting up of a library sub-committee to organise and control the service, the appointment of a -librarian, and the acceptance of responsibility for the insurance and loss of books. The staff of the Public Library will assist in the selection of the books required. Library Journal The report of the committee also states that the Dunedin Public Library Association has been granted permission to issue a monthly journal containing a list of additions to the Public Library, and notes about the activities of the library. The journal will be distributed to users of the library and others interested. The library staff will supply the information required, and the publication will be compiled by a special sub-committee of tne association. The cost of the journal is to be obtained from sponsors or advertising revenue. Building By-laws To ensure that the city by-laws are fully complied with by persons who undertake building work, and to expedite the work of the building inspector's department, the Works Committee of the City Council has given authority for applications to be invited from the present staff for a chief building inspector, and for applications to be invited for an additional inspector for the department. The report of the committee adds that authority has also been given to purchase a four-seater car for the. use of the building section of the cTIy engineer’s department. Instructions to Engineer Instructions have been given to the city engineer, 'Mr S. G. Scoular, by the Works Cdmmitte of the council to remove the disused weighbridge, building in Lower Rattray street; to fence off the gun emplacement at the top of the Dowling street steps to prevent the continuation of nuisances being caused there; and to erect a mercury vapour light in Princes street at the Stock Exchange Building. The existing light opposite the foot of High street is to be removed to a point over the west traffic lane in Princes street. Seats for Octagon The Reserves Committee has granted authority for two additional seats to be erected in the Upper Octagqn near the Robert Burns Memorial as a result of requests for extra seating in this reserve.
