MILTON

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE COMPETITIONS The annual competitions for South Otago St. John Ambulance Cadets were held at the Toko High School on Saturday, when teams from Balclutha, Clinton, and Milton competed for the Burn Cups. Seven teams from Dunedin and two from Port Chalmers were present by invitation. Although Port Chalmers gained first and second places in the boys competition the cup conditions stipulated that the cups could not be won by other than South Otago teams, and a team from Balclutha, being third, was the cup winner. Novelty was added to the competition by the Inclusion of a girl as No. 1 in the boys' competition. District Superintendent E. V. Hughes (Balclutha) was in control, and the judging was carried out by the following:—Stretcher drill and transport. Messrs Burland (Dunedin) and Ogilvy (Romahapa); bed-making, Mesdames Hunt and Goodrich (Dunedin); bandaging, Mrs J. Taylor (Milton); oral first aid, Mrs J. Dignan (Milton); practical first aid, Messrs D. Latimer and E. Arbuckle (Balclutha). Four teams from Balclutha, two from Clinton, and five from Milton competed, and valuable assistance was given by parents and senior division nursing members. The Burn Nursing Cup in the home nursing section was won by Clinton (296 points) with Clinton No. 2 second (288 points) and Milton third (2871 points). The individual roller bandaging competition was won by Miss R. Copland (Clinton), with Stuart Cross (Balclutha) second. SALE OF WORK The annual sale of work on behalf of St. Mary's Church was held at afternoon and evening sessions on Saturday, and there were large attendances. A good clearance was effected of the goods on the stalls, and various competitions were held with the result that approximately £3lO was taken. Special attractions during the afternoon were a fancy dress parade with decorated bicycles and tricycles. followed by a baby show, while at night a “ quiz ” session was held. The Mayor (Mr C. W. S. Keinan), who judged the bicycles and tricycles, and the Mayoress (Mrs Keinan), who judged the fancy dress parade, gave several of the prizes to the winners. The baby show was judged .by Sisters P. Walters and A. Hallum, of the local hospital. Mr K. Shrimpton was the quizmaster' at the evening session. Following are the results of the judging:— Tiny Tots.—Best fancy dress, Elizabeth Hide (Blue Bell); most original, Avis Dowdall (Miss New Zealand); best pair, Marie and Tommy Cavanagh (King and Queen of Hearts). School Children.—Best fancy dress, Gay Cox (Drummer Girl); most original. Annette Hide (Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary); national, Barbara Anderson (Gipsy); best pair, Vivienne and Colleen Wlndle (Bride and Birdegroom). Decorated bicycle: Brian Kenny 1, Errol Healey 2; highly commended, Elizabeth Mallon and Bruce Burleigh. Decorated tricycle: John Lane and Colin Kreft (equal) 1. Baby Show.—Up to 9 months; Baby Scott 1, Baby Thomson 2; 10 entries- Ten months up to 18 months: Baby Hughes 1, Baby Henderson 2. \
