MAN KILLED INSTANTLY
ACETYLENE GAS EXPLOSION P.A. AUCKLAND, Oct. 17.
A married man was killed instantly at his home at Northcote on Saturday afternoon when a home-made acetylene re-charging outfit exploded. He was Maurice Victor Wallace, aged 44. a transport driver employed By the New Zealand Railways, living at Beach road, Sulphur Beach, Northcote. Mr Wallace was working in a small wofkshop at the rear of his house when the accident occurred. He was generating acetylene gas for a welding apparatus by forcing gas under pressure into a steel bottle from a small steel generating bottle. Raw carbide had Been placed in the small bottle, which was connected by hoses to the water supply and the larger holding bottle. It is thought that as Mr Wallace was bending over the set one of the connections blew off, and the small bottle exploded in his face.
