RESERVE TRAINING
UNITED STATES DEFENCE PRESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YQRK, Oct. 16. President Truman announced today that he had directed the Defence Department to organise all military reserve units required for national security. The presidential order, requiring action without delay, called for the establishment of a vigorous and progressive reserve training programme. Mr Truman said the organised reserve corps of the army and air force had not made as rapid progress » as other branches of the defence services in building up their post-war strength. He added: “The order was intended to give the balance necessary to our national defence in its broadggji aspect*” The ; presidential secretary, Mr Charles Ross, said later that Mr Tru man’s order was not the result of an> new deterioration of international relations. The President had no particular goal in mind for strengthening the reserves. Mr Ross said: “It seems the navy and the marines got ahead of the army, and the air force in organising their reserves and this order is intended to obtain a better balance.”
