BLUFF HARBOUR

NEW BUILDING OPENED WATERFRONT COMMISSION P.A. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 17. The opening of the Waterfront Industry Commission’s administrative building and waterside workers’ assembly hall at Bluff on Saturday marked another milestone in the history of the commission. Probably the most modern building of its kind in New Zealand, it provides further illustration of the steps taken to better the lot of the waterfront worker. Attended by more than 200 watersiders, officials of the Bluff Harbour Board and representatives of shipping companies and various other bodies, it was an auspicious opening ceremony with many speakers drawing interesting comparisons between present-day conditions on the waterfront and those of earlier days. The official opening was performed by Judge Dalglish, chairman of the Waterfront Industry Commission. The new building ranks as one of the most important developments on the wharf at Bluff. With the outer walls of asbestos shingles, and a tiled roof, the building presents a smart appearance. The east end contains the commission’s administrative offices, in the middle portion of the building is the assembly hall, which should accommodate up to 300 people, and at the rear is the first aid room, kitchen, boiler house, locker rooms, showers and toilet suite. The building is designed so that it can be shifted to another site should wharf developments warrant It.
