FIRE IN FACTORY
TOP FLOOR GUTTED HEAVY LOSS OF MATERIALS P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. The top floor of a three-storey factory building in Edward street, Wellington, was gutted by fire early yesterday morning. Bursting through the roof with almost explosive suddenness shortly after 1 a.m., the flames shot about 50 feet into the air. The top floor of the building was occupied by Parisienne Gowns, Ltd., as a workroom. Many sewing ipachines and a considerable quantity of materials were lost in the fire. Bales of tobacco, owned by the St. James Tobacco Company, which were in the same building, were all spoiled by water. The company recently began manufacturing cigarettes for the New Zealand market. The cause of the fire is not known, but the damage was heavy. The brigade made a good save and worked quickly to stop the fire from spreading.
