LARGEST OPIUM HAUL
SEIZURE AT AUSTRALIAN PORT PACKAGE FOUND IN SHIP’S FUNNEL MELBOURNE, Oct. 14. Workmen engaged in overhauling the British India freighter Chanda, at Victoria Dock, found a suspicious bundle suspended in the funnel. Subsequently Customs officers took possession of 3501 b of opium, worth about £28,000 on the Australian black market. This is the largest opium haul yet made at an Australian port. The vessel has been laid up at Melbourne for four months for refitting.
