ERECTION OF FLATS
EXPERIMENT IN COMMUNAL OWNERSHIP
LARGE WELLINGTON PROJECT P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. Blocks of fiats to be occupied by communal owners and run on a nonprofit basis are planned for Adelaide road. Wellington. When construction is complete, there will be accommodation for 1600 persons. Similar schemes have been successful in Continental countries, but this will be the first time such a plan has been undertaken in New Zealand. The Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, has given authority for floating a company with a nominal capital of £250,000, to go to allotment at £75,000. The City Council is to be asked to co-operate and invoke its powers of acquisition under the Housing Improvement Act, 1945, to acquire the land. No commitments were undertaken by the City Council at its meeting this week, but it was decided to give the proposed company every encouragement.
To make sure tHat no goats remained on Great Island, in the Three Kings Group, a party of scientists visited the island last week. They were surprised by the remarkable regeneration of flora since 1946, when goats on the island were exterminated by the Department of Internal Affairs.
