THREAT TO TRADE
IMPORTATION OF CLOTHING
MANUFACTURERS CONCERNED P.A. NAPIER, Oct 15. •The granting of licences to import clothing is opposed by the New Zealand Garment Manufacturers’ Federation. This was indicated at the annual conference of the federation to-day, when it agreed that a telegram be sent to the Minister of Customs, Mr Nash, recording the federation’s objection. to the granting of licences to import wearing apparel and hosiery unless a full investigation in consultation with the federation showed the imports to be necessary to meet the pap between requirements and local production. “The industry is equipped to meet practically all requirements,” said the telegram. “Anv importation even of token quantities will in many lines react detrimentally to the New Zealand clothing manufacturers and will most assuredy endanger the chosen occupations of 24,000 workers in the industry." •
