DEFENCE POLICY
COMPULSORY TRAINING DECISION AWAITED “The New Zealand Returned Services’ Association has been consistent in its attitude about compulsory military training as a basis for the' future defence of this country. The matter is vital at the present time, and those in a position of responsibility should do something at once," declared the president of the Dunedin R.S.A., Mr A. J. H. Jeavons. at a meeting of the executive last night. He was reporting on the activities of a special Defence Committee that had been set up. The president said there had been expressions of opinion in the community which were adverse to the idea of compulsory military training. “It is the correct and urgent solution to the problem,” Mr Jeavons said. “The best military brains this country has produced are behind the idea. There are elements in the country prepared actively to support a programme to the contrary, and it is our duty to press the matter urgently.” The president welcomed Mr T. A. Turner the Otago and Southland representative on the Dominion Executive, who, he said, was there to discuss the matter.
The executive then went into committee.
