Sustained Attack By Australian Bowlers Subdues Englishmen
New Zealand Press Association—Copyright Rec. 1.15 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 17. Lindwall again proved to be the bogey for England's batsmen when after 20 minutes play in England’s second innings he collected Edrich’s wicket with the total at 64. Edrich had added only five runs to his overnight score of 23, and England’s total had increased by 10. A rousing reception was accorded Compton as he walked to the wicket to replace Edrich and the erbwd once more was placing its faith in the batsman who had improved England’s position in previous test games.
With Hutton and Compton both playing carefully and confidently, England’s total advanced slowly in the face of a steady and accurate attack by the Australian bowlers.
The weather was fine arid the wicket in good order when play was resumed in the fifth and final test at the Oval this morning. There was again a large attendance of spectators. Lindwall and W. Johnston were bowling exceptionally well—probably their best efforts of the tour—and both were responsible for keeping the batsmen on the defensive and the rate of
chances. When Compton came in there was a momentary spell in the scoring but it was soon apparent that Compton was to be the aggressor. Hutton’s total moved to 40, but Compton adopted different tactics and his score soon moyed up behind his partners. . The pitch of the Australian attack, however, did not faulter, and the bowlers were only assisted by a team of keen fieldsmen. Scores:—

scoring slow. Johnston in particular was impressive, and from 11 overs this morning the batsmen were able to take only 10 runs. Edrich early in the morning survived a confident appeal for leg before. But it was Lindwall who was causing the anxious moments and shortly after the l.b.w. appeal, Edrich attempted to push a fast in-swinger from Lindwall to mid-off. The ball swung late and uprooted his off stump. Hutton meanwhile was continuing his steady knock and giving no
