DEMAND FOR INCREASE PRICE OF ARGENTINA MEAT BRITISH NEWSPAPER’S ADVICE N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 17. Discussing a report from Buenos Aires that Senor Miranda, the Argentine Finance Minister, will demand a further increase in the price of Argentina meat when he arrives in London next month, the Yorkshire Post advocates that Sir Stafford Cripps and Mr John Strachey should refuse to make any further concessions to Senor Miranda, even at the risk of losing the one-seventh of the present British meat ration which the Argentine supplies “Britain is paying about the same price for meat from the Argentine as she is paying to New Zealand,” states the Post. “ Housewives and butchers will probably agree that there is no comparison in the quality of the meat from the two countries. “The quality of Argentine mutton in particular is reported to have deteriorated during the past 12 months. We know housewives who are bitterly emphatic on this point.” Pointing out that Argentina economy is already in a serious condition owing to Colonel Peron’s policies; and that Senor Miranda has therefore a very good reason for trying to obtain higher prices, the newspaper concludes: “Our meat ration is certainly small enough. But even when allowance has been made for Marshall our overseas trade accounts, are badly out of balance. “We cannot afford to pay more for our meat than we are paying already, and if Senor Miranda asks for more it might be well to make it clear to him that we shall have to db without. We must not be fooled by the extortionate Senor Miranda.”
