Adoption of University Suggested by Professor

A letter from Professor G. A. F. Knight, suggesting that the University of Otago might consider “ adopting ” a stricken university in the western zone of Germany was received by the University Council yesterday. It was decided that the matter should be referred to the Professorial Board and the Students’ Association.

Professor Knight’s letter stated that a number of Western universities had each adopted a university in Europe and suggested that the University of Otago could be allotted one in the British zone of Germany. Education authorities were faced with extreme over-crowding, particularly as there were still some 12,000,000 refugees from the Eastern zone in the area under British control. Paper, notebooks, ink and pens were sadly lacking, and’ the students were starving for Western literature.

“The universities are receiving as much information as th?y like about the way of life of the East, but they are not getting the benefit of hearing much about the way of life in the West,” stated the letter.
