CALL TO PRAYER

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES MEETING IN AMSTERDAM P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. A call to prayer has been issued to all churches participating in the World Council of Churches in connection with the forthcoming meeting of the council in Amsterdam. The call is signed by the Archbishops of Canterbury, Thyateira, and Upsala, the president of the Protestant Federation of France, and Dr J. R. Mott, all of whom are presidents of provisional committees of the council.

“About 450 representatives from 150 churches in 45 nations will comprise the first meeting of the World Council,” said the chairman of the National Council of Churches of New Zealand, the Rev. W. A. Burley, announcing the ■call to prayer. “It is claimed that this will be the most representative world conference ever held. All Christian churches, with one exception, are constituent members of the council, and on this occasion the Roman Catholic Church will be represented by 10 official observers. t ' “The council will open on Sunday, August 22, with a great act of public worship. The foremost leaders of the church will take part. Though this is the first meeting of the council , because of the World War, the council has done much through its provisional committees in the reconstruc(ion of Europe and to help refugees and displaced persons. “The representatives from the Dominion attending the meeting will include Archbishop West-Watson, Bishop F. A. Bennett, the Rev. J. Baird, and the Rev. R. Dudley. Mr Ernest Brown will go from, England to represent the Baptist' Union of New Zealand. The Rev. A. A. Brash and Mr T. C. Brash will represent New Zealand’s National Council of Churches and the National Missionary Council respectively. “It is urged, concluded Mr Burley, “ that the clergy and members of the constituent churches shall observe August 22 as a day of special prayer for the success of this great gathering, which one writer has claimed can do more than any other for the world community."
