SECOND GAME DRAWN

AUSTRALIA AND LANCASHIRE IKIN SAVES COUNTY FROM DEFEAT N.Z.P. A.—Copyright LONDON. Aug. 10. J. T. Ikin, who made 99, saved Lancashire from defeat by Australia. After an uncertain and slow start. Ikin hit cleanly and well. He was out in the first over of Lindwall’s new-ball spell.

Washbrook, who was suffering from damage to his thumb, did not bat in Lancashire's second innings. Australia continued to bat until lunch before declaring. Lancashire went in, 456 runs behind, with no chance of winning, and the declaration was too late for victory by Australia, thanks to Ikin’s gallant stand. Lindwall took two wickets with successive balls just before stumps, but Roberts saved the hat trick.

Bradman’s eighth century of the tour was his slowest and most elegant. He batted just over three and a-half hours for 133. He never seemed to be wholly at ease against the well-sustained attack, but he gave no specific chances. The Bradman-Barnes partnership yielded 141 runs for the second wicket, with Barnes as the dominant member. Barnes batted 178 minutes and hit 10 4's. Bradman hit 17 4’s.

England will probably have to meet Australia in the fifth test without Washbrook, its most reliable opener, says the Australian Associated Press. The base of Washbrook’s right thumb was badly bruised yesterday. The doctor advised him to take no further part in the present match against the Australians and to withdraw from the Lancashire team against Northamptonshire to-morrow. Tile first match between Australia and Lancashire, played earlier in the tour, was also drawn. Scores:—
