FAITH IN BRITAIN

RETURNING TO NORMAL CONDITIONS MR W. APPLETON’S IMPRESSION N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 11. At a.time when many of us.are inclined to make a song about our misfortunes, it is encouraging to know that among the peoples of the dominions, faith in Britain stands fast, says the Yorkshire Post. It adds that at a meeting of the Harrogate Town Council, a welcome guest was Mr W. Appleton, the Mayor of Wellington, who, with his wife, is visiting Yorkshire, the birthplace of his father and father-in-law. Mr Appleton took the chair normally occupied by the Deputy Mayor, and his visit came as a surprise to everybody except the Mayor and Alderman Sir Bernard Lomas-Walker, whom he met in Wellington not long ago. “ During our stay in Yorkshire,” said Mr Appleton, “my wife and I have been overwhelmed by your typical hospitality, We can see most encouraging signs in Britain of a return to more normal conditions.

“I have very great faith that in due course good old England will emerge from her difficulties and be in the vanguard of the progress of civilisation,” continued Mr Appleton.

He added that he had found Yorkshire hospitality a bit embarrassing. “You must remember,” he said, “that I am the. New Zealand chairman of the Food for Britain Campaign, and when I go back and tell them how well I have been fed and treated, what are they going to say? ”
