WANAKA BARRAGE
TESTS OF RIVERBED ‘ PONTOON IN USE As part of the investigation into possible sites for the barrage to be built at the outlet of Wanaka for control of the lake, a pontoon has been completed at Wanaka and towed from Roy’s Bay to the river. From- it tests will be made as to the suitability of the riverbed for foundations for a dam and for dredging it to lower the outlet level of the lake.
The staff carrying out the investigations at Wanaka has also put down. several test pits three miles down the tiver, just above Albert Town. The purpose of these pits is also to test the lower strata both for foundations and for dredging activities. The construction of a barrage at Wanaka is part of the Roxburgh Gorge power scheme, for which i control of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. is regarded as essential if the full output of "the station is to be achieved.
