"A THIRD PARTY”

Sir,—For “ Miner’s" benefit I would point out that conservative opinion is based, first and last, upon individualism, and liberal opinion is merely Conservatism with a broadened outlook. On the other hand, Socialism, together with its ultimate goal, Communism, is based upon collectivism. The two ideologies cannot be successfully run in double harness, as “ Miner ” appears to think, because Socialism enables all production, however great, to be consumed; whereas, under individual enterprise, there is always a tendency to the formation of commodity bottlenecks which cannot be consumed. Under sucn conditions double harness becomes extremely difficult, for, while the leftwheeler is running along smoothly, the right-wheeler is either making the pace or jibbing. This condition of affairs is being exemplified before “br eyes in New Zealand, Australia, and Great Britain at the present time.-I am, Jolm
