NEW SEASON IN OTAGO

FIRST MEETING NEXT MONTH The new reason of racing in Otago will be opened at Wingatui on September 11, when the Otago Hunt Club will hold its annual race meeting with stakes amounting to £3500, In keeping with the centennial spirit, the club has allotted £IOSO to the Centennial Steeplechase, which is one of the richest stakes ever offered by a hunt club in the Dominion. The programme is one that will assuredly appeal to owners and trainers, and the nominations, which are due on August 24, should be of record dimensions-. The Dunedin Jockey Club will race on September 25 and October 2, and the programme is in circulation. On the first day the principal event will be the Ranfurly Handicap, of £6OO, and the McLean Stakes, the first of the two-year-old classics, will be run for a stakes of £SOO. The Dunedin Guineas and J. B. Reid Cup will be run on the second day, the stake being £7OO and the J. B. Reid Challenge Cup. The principal handicap will be the Grandstand Handicap, of £SOO. A note on the programme states that in the event of the acceptances or probable starters in any race exceeding the safety number for the course, such race shall be run in divisions if the actual number of starters so requires. This proviso is also included in the Hunt Club programme. Nominations for the Dunedin meeting are due on September 10.
