CHATHAM CUP

ELIMINATION GAME WIN FOR SOUTHLAND TEAM The only Association football game played on Saturday was between RoslynWakari, and Brigadiers (Invercargill). Brigadiers won by 6 goals to 3. A Chatham Cup fixture, the match was transferred to Culling Park from the Caledonian Ground, and an enthusthiastic band of workers, led by the president of the Otago Football Association, Mr W. P. Smith, used garden forks to assist in getting rid of much of the surface water to enable the game to be played. The fixture drew a large crowd of supporters, who were treated to an excellent game. The star of the match was D. Ottley, of Brigadiers, who rose to brilliant heights. He was ably assisted by his winger, B. Olley. The visiting forwards were resourceful and excelled in the heavy going. The half line was solid, and McKenzie, at full-back, was outstanding.

JRostyn-Wakari also rose to the occasion and gave a fine all-round display. Burgess, at left-half, was the pick of the team. On the day, however, Brigadiers were a much better side. They were showered with congratulations after the’match, and local followers would not be surprised if they find their way into the Dominion Chatham Cup final. The teams were:—

Roslyn-Wakari.—Stewart; Ramage, Ness; Smyth, Holleybon, Burgess; Garrick, Welham. Burgess, Stanley, Hughes.

Brigadiers. McKendry; McKenzie, O’Dawson; G. Officer, R. Morrison, D. Holden: D. Wilson, G. Gordon, N. Morrison, D. Ottley, B. Olley. Play opened at a fast pace. Wakari was prominently early, but offside play -spoilt two good chances. Ottley carried down on the left, and the Roslyn goal was threatened for a time. Ffom a penalty, taken by R. Morrison, the visitors opened the scoring. Roslyn had the better of the exchanges for a time, and Smyth, with a long kick, evened the score. The slippery ball glanced off Morrison’s head into the net. Olley and Ottley were prominent and Ottley sc'ored, but Ness equalised from a penalty. After a break down the middle of the field, Burgess back-heeled to Garrick, and his strong shot was partially saved by McKendry. The ball, however, went over the goal-line to give Roslyn-Wakari the lead. Ottley again cut the Roslyn defence to pieces and transferred to Morrison, who scored. An excellent shot by Stanley was saved, and a cross by Hughes went a-begging. Ramage gave away a comer when hard pressed, and Ottley placed to Olley, who scored. McKenzie brought Burgess down and cleared to Gordon. He sent to Wilson, who carried the ball on, and closed in before beating Stewart, in goal. Burgess went close with a " first-timer ” from Garrick, but the Southland team was now playing great football. Ottley beat three opponents brilliantly, but his powerful shot was deflected for a corner. Ottley placed right in front for N. Morrison to score the final goal. Mr W. Dodd was.'the referee.
