NEW CARRIAGEWAY
MORNINGTON ROAD TREES NOW BEING FELLED Rapid progress is being made with the removal of the trees along Mornington road, which runs from the Main South road at Look-ouf Point and joins up with Elgin road in. Mornington, in preparation for the widening of the road. A 36-foot carriageway is to be made there, and eventually the road is to be tar sealed. It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of this year, after the metalling has had time to consolidate. The contractors expect to make a start on the removal of the tree sturpps along Mornington road this week. The stumps will be hauled out by heavy tractors. Heavy machinery will then be used to widen the road, principally on the side farthest from the city. The work provides for a grass margin on the south side of the road, and two pavements. The road will be closed to traffic to-morrow.
