INDUSTRIAL FAIR

CENTENNIAL EVENT VENTURE IN DUNEDIN THEATRE STAGE SHOWS A centennial industrial fair in Dunedin, which it is hoped will eclipse the New Zealand Industries Fair held here in 1944, is planned by the OtagoSouthland Manufacturers’ Association. This will be opened in Brydone Hall on September 15, and will conclude on September 25. All manufacturers will have an opportunity to exhibit at the fair, states a brochure issued by the association, and a high standard will be required from all exhibitors. The general lay-out will be on modernistic lines, and flourescent lighting will be used throughout the exhibition. His Majesty’s Theatre has been booked for the presentation of stage attractions in conjunction with the fair in the adjacent building. These attractions will include fashion shows, variety programmes, and revues. This use of the theatre will release floor space at the exhibition wjiich wouid otherwise be used for an entertainment stage. Plans for the lay-out of both floors of Brydone Hall are included in the brochure. It is stated that the exhibition is being designed as a whole, and that a contract will be let for the work, all stands conforming to the prepared design. This, it is explained, will obviate a miscellaneous group of stands and will mean that all available floor space will be used. An added advantage is that manufacturers will be spared the worry of designing and building their own stands. The Government is prepared to contribute a court which will be an acquisition to the exhibition. This court will contain a cinema, various working models, a lounge and conveniences for visitors. The Government now has a special committee which co-ordinates all departments for exhibiton purposes. A complete range of attractive lounge furniture has also been acquired. Aid for Britain will be the dominant feature of the,Government court. No restriction will be placed on signwriting and the use of trade marks and other forms of publicity at the exhibition. An Order-in-Council will be obtained for the temporary suspension of the terms of industrial awards covering hours, so that exhibitors’ stands may be conveniently staffed until closing time each evening. A total of 80,000 persons visited the fair in 1944, and the Manufacturers’ Association expects that the attendance this year will be 100,000. Applications for space will open next Tuesday.
