Second Day of Dunedin Jockey Club’s Meeting’

The Dunedin Jockey Club’s three-day meeting was continued at Wingatui yesterday in fine weather and before a good crowd. After rain overnight, the going was heavy, and form was upset, not one favourite being successful, . Dark Arrow, the winner of the Birthday Handicap on the first day, made it a double by winning the Provincial Handicap after taking the lead with about half a mile to run. Falconbridge came home strongly for second, , Lisheen was made a warm favourite for the Wingatui Steeplechase, but he did not jump as cleanly as on the first day and lost ground at two of the fences. He was travelling over everything in- the straight but just failed to get up. Young Bob was one of the leaders throughout the running of the hurdlbs and although he screwed at the last jump he won decisively.

The gate takings amounted, to £IO4B ss, compared with £ll9O 5s on the second day last year. The totalisator handled £64,459, against £63,368 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £lO9l. NOTES ON THE RUNNING

ROSLYN STEEPLES From a struggling start First Out took up the running from Kosciusko, Sunstorm, Sir Dragon, Ballyaggan, French Glider, Dark Warrior, and Paladeo. As they ran to the water water jump Sir Dragon took the lead and was followed by First Out, French Glider, Dark Warrior, Koscuisko, and Ballyaggan. First Out and Koscuisko fell at the second leg of the stand double and Sir Dragon at the brush running out of the straight. French Glider was left out in front from Dark Warrior. Ballyaggan, Paladeo, Maharajah, and More Boa. As they swung across the top Dark Warrior was out in front, but he came down at the sevenfurlong fence. Maharajah moved up smartly passing the six and was followed by French Glider. Ballyaggan Paladeo, More Boa, and Sunstorm. Maharajah was first over the last jump and came on for an easy win from Paladeo, with Ballyaggan third. More Boa was fourth, followed by French Glider, with Sunstorm the only other to finish. • NOVICE HANDICAP Crease, Gay Paree and The Turk were the last to leave, and when they settled down Gold Winner was showing the way to Super, Lord Chase, Billy Mac and Roval Saleve. There was little alteration to the straight. Gold Winner showing the way to Billy Mac, Super, Brawl, Lord Chase, Phantom Night, Jump Off, and Palmate. When well in line for homo Lord Chase came through with a solid run for a decisive win from Super, who was under pressure all the way np the straight, with: Billy Mac third and Palmate fourth. The next to finish were The Turk, Gold Winner, Greyfel and Olio. JUNE HURDLE HANDICAP The carded field went to the post for the Hurdle Handicap. Tring was badly left and Siegform began slowly. Vanity King hooked the first hurdle and as they came through the straight Robot showed the way followed by Young Bob, Foreign Ways, Royal Robe and Dowlair. Running past the post Detain ran up to third behind Robot and Young Bob, with Foreign Ways next ahead of Siegform, and Royal Robe. The last-named came down at the jump opposite the mile, and into the back it was Robot from Young Bob, Siegform, Dowlair, Foreign Ways, Sphere and Turf Topic. Dowlair came down at the flv6furlong jump and Sphere began to move up. Young Bob, who headed Robot off with about six furlongs to run, led round to the straight from Sphere, the order after that being Siegform, Turf Topic, Robot, Detain and Vanity King. Once into the straight Young Bob came on to win decisively from Sphere, with Siegform just beating Vanity King for third. Then came Detain, Turf Topic, Robot, Foreign Ways and Arabian Knight. SOUTHERN HANDICAP Kasimov, Cloud Song and Recharge began slowly, and Night Owl lost his rider just after the start. Kasimov moved up smartly, and when the field settled down Bonny Royal and Lilli Marlene showed the way to Kasimov, Show Boy, Kildare Lad, Extra Flight and Silver Spray Bonny Royal still shaded Lilli Marlene as they turned, into the straight, and after them the order was Kasimov. Show Boy, Extra Flight, Siegtone, Sir Raimond (wide out) and Silver Spray. Finishing well, Extra Flight got up to beat Show Boy, with Siegtone third and Sir Raimond fourth. Then came Kasimov, Kildare Lad, Bonny Royal and Lilli Marlene. WINGATUI STEEPLECHASE First Out and Ruling Moment dropped ouf of the Wingatui Steeplechase, leaving five to go to the post. Siglow went oqt fast to lead through the back from Eleanor Star, Lisheen, Indian Sign and Debater. The last-named put In a bad jump at the first of the double brush, and found to the water jump Siglow showed the way followed bv Eleanor Star, Indian Sign and Lisheen. Debater made up ground in the straight and the field was in fairly close order over the double brush. Across the top it was Siglow from Eleanor Star, Indian Sign, Lisheen and Debater. Lisheen pecked.on landing over the fence opposite the mile. He also put in a bad jump at the brush. Siglow was well clear running to the water jump and was followed over it by Eleanor Stgr, Lisheen and Indian Sign, with Debater dropping away. Eleanor Star gathered Siglow in and led him over the last fence, with Lisheen in third place. x The last-named threw out a strong challenge in the straight and was gathering Eleanor Star in at every stride, but was half a length away at the finish. Siglow was third and Indian Sign fourth. PROVINCIAL HANDICAP They got away to a good line, and past the post, the first time Verdant led from Thornbridge, Hart Royal, Dark Arrow, Hunting Charm. RUning to the five-furlong post Thornbridge went right back through the field, and Dark Arrow hit the front from Graeme, who was followed by Pride of Mossburn, Fine Night, Hart Royal, Verdant, and Falconbridge. Into the straight it was Dark Arrow from Graeme. Pride of Mossburn, Falconbridge, Verdant, Fine Night. Hunting Charm, and Foxchase. In the run home Dark Arrow held on to win from Falconbridge, who came with a fine run, and Verdant got up for third. Graeme was fourth, followed by Fine Night, Hunting Charm, Joygiver, and Foxchase. Grill was last. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP From a good start Theocritus was first to break the line from Faites vos Jeux and Haughty Dick. Places changed quickly running down to the- four furlongs, where the order was Geisha Girl, Super Flight, Connaught, Alamo.nde, Theocritus, Haughty Dick. Triumphal, and Duvaals. Geisha Girl still led into the straight, followed by Super Flight, Faites vos Jeux, Connaught, Theocritus, Haughty Dick, Magnaform, and Winning Cheer. In the run to the judge Triumphal and Winning Cheer, two of the outsiders, worked clear, and Triumphal won from Winning Cheer, with Super Flight third, ahead of Magnaform, who did not get a clear run in the straight. Then came Theocritus, Renege, Faites vos Jeux, Te Anau Lady, and Bath Slipper. Alamode was last. AERODROME HANDICAP Dark Chief got away slowly, but went up fast to lead across the top from Queen Argosy, Tenorman, Sword Dancer, St. Simper, and Detract. Minion was last. Past the six it was Dark Chief and Queen Argosy, Detract, Tenorman, St. Simper, and Moonlit. Running past the. four furlongs Dark Chief and Queen Argosy led from Sword Dancer, with Detract, Moon-* lit, and Some Sal next.- Coming round to the straight Sword Dancer went up to Dark Chief, and they were followed by Some Sal, Minion, and Detract.
